Somewhere on the rear panel of serious audio interfaces sits a small square socket with a spring-loaded door, usually labelled OPTICAL or ADAT. It looks like an afterthought. It is the most consequential connector on the panel, because it is the one that decides whether your interface has a ceiling.
What ADAT is
ADAT — the ADAT Lightpipe protocol, to give it its Sunday name — is a way of sending multiple channels of digital audio down a single optical fibre cable (the connector is called TOSLINK). It dates from the era of Alesis digital tape machines, survived them, and became the industry’s standard way to add inputs to an interface.
The idea is simple. Analogue-to-digital conversion does not have to happen inside your interface. A separate box — an eight-channel microphone preamp with its own converters — can do the converting, then hand the finished digital channels to your interface over one cable. Your interface merges them with its own inputs and presents everything to the computer as one device.
No second interface. No driver conflicts. No aggregate-device workarounds. One cable.
What ADAT is not
It is not S/PDIF, although the two can share the same physical socket. S/PDIF is a stereo digital connection — two channels — used to bring in a CD player, a DAC, or another stereo source. ADAT is the multichannel protocol. Interfaces with a well-designed optical input let you choose which protocol the socket speaks; on the Layarav R4 that is a front-panel toggle, with the current mode shown on the display.
The channel-count arithmetic
ADAT’s bandwidth is fixed, so the number of channels it carries depends on the sample rate you run your session at. On the R4 the totals work out like this:

Most tracking sessions live at 44.1 or 48 kHz, where you get the full eight extra channels. The practical reading of the table: a 4-in interface with ADAT is a 12-in interface that has not needed to be one yet.
Why this matters most at the 4×4 tier
At the entry tier — two inputs, no optical — the upgrade path is a bin. The day you need more channels, the old interface has no way to participate; you replace it and re-learn everything.
A 4×4 interface with an ADAT input inverts that. The four onboard preamps handle everything a small room throws at them, and the optical input waits. When the day comes — a drum kit, a horn section, a choir, a client who is a band rather than a voice — you add an eight-channel ADAT preamp. Second-hand and new, these are made by half the industry, at every price. Your interface, your monitoring setup, your driver settings and your muscle memory all stay exactly where they were.
Setting it up, in one paragraph
Connect the preamp’s ADAT output to the interface’s optical input with a TOSLINK cable. Set both boxes to the same sample rate, and set the preamp — or the interface, depending on your setup — to be the clock master so the two converters agree about time; a lock indicator confirms the handshake. On the R4 the ADAT state is visible on the front-panel display, so a lost lock is something you see, not something you discover in the recording. After that, the eight optical channels simply appear in your DAW alongside the four analogue ones.
The short version
ADAT is eight extra inputs down one cable, using converters that live in a box you buy later. It is the cheapest insurance a growing studio can carry, and it is the specification the entry tier quietly leaves off the panel. If you are choosing an interface now, our advice is blunt: do not buy a ceiling. Buy a doorway.
