An audio interface is the one purchase in a home studio that touches every recording you will ever make. The microphone can be upgraded per project. The plug-ins can be swapped per song. The interface sits between everything you record and everything you hear, for years. It deserves twenty minutes of clear thinking, which is what this guide is.
We build an interface, so read this knowing where we stand. But the framework below is the one we would use to buy anyone’s.
Start with channels, not brands
The single most common regret we hear from creators is not “I bought the wrong brand.” It is “I bought two inputs and needed four within a year.”
Count the sources you will realistically record at the same time:
- A voice and a guitar, together — that is already two inputs, and if the guitar is miked rather than DI’d, the maths changes again.
- A podcast with a guest — two microphones, each needing its own gain control and its own track. A single shared input is an editing punishment.
- A tabla pair, a duet, a live two-guitar arrangement — Indian home recording leans on simultaneous performance more than the Western bedroom-pop template the entry interfaces were designed around.
A 2-in interface records two things. A 4-in interface records a small band. The price difference between the tiers is real but modest; the workflow difference is a wall.
The specifications that matter
Interface spec sheets mix numbers that describe the sound with numbers that describe the brochure. These are the ones that describe the sound:
Dynamic range (in dB, A-weighted). How far the loudest clean signal sits above the noise floor. At this price tier, honest published figures run from around 100 dB to around 110 dB. The differences are audible in quiet sources — voice, acoustic instruments, room mics. Be suspicious of any interface that does not publish this number at all.
Equivalent input noise (EIN). The hiss the preamp itself contributes, measured with the gain up. −128 dB is excellent at any price. This matters most with dynamic microphones and quiet singers, where you use the most gain.
Gain range. A wide range — something like −12 dB to +40 dB — means the same input handles a whisper into a dynamic mic and a hot synth line without an external pad or booster.
Maximum input level. How hard a signal can hit the input before it folds over. This is the number that saves a take when a drummer shows up.
The specifications that are mostly marketing
“192 kHz!” Nearly every modern interface converts up to 192 kHz, including ours. It is table stakes, not a differentiator. Nobody’s demo got signed because of the sample rate.
“Studio-grade converters” with no dynamic-range figure attached is a sentence, not a specification. The number is the claim; ask for the number.
Bundled software. Entry interfaces increasingly compete on the licences in the box — lite DAW editions, subscription trials, plug-in starter packs. Be honest with yourself about whether you will use them past the first week, and notice what the bundle is standing in for. Software licences expire, lapse, or break with OS upgrades. Hardware I/O does not.
Think about the studio you will have in two years
The quiet spec that separates a purchase from an investment is expansion. An interface with an ADAT optical input can accept eight more channels from an external preamp over a single light-pipe cable — which means the day you need to record a drum kit or a vocal ensemble, you add a box instead of replacing the interface. Entry-tier interfaces almost never include it. It is the difference between a ceiling and a doorway; we wrote a full explainer on ADAT if the term is new to you.
The same logic applies to MIDI: five-pin DIN in and out means keyboards, sound modules and drum machines — including two decades of second-hand gear at Indian prices — connect without adapters.
Buying in India, specifically
Three things change when the buyer is here rather than in London or Los Angeles:
- Warranty service is only as real as its nearest service point. A three-year warranty honoured through an Indian RMA process is worth more than a five-year one that requires international shipping and a customs form. Before buying anything, find the actual claims process in writing.
- The listed price is not always the landed price. Grey-market and parallel imports can look cheaper until a fault appears and no authorised service will touch the unit. Buy from an authorised channel and check that the serial number is one the manufacturer will stand behind.
- Power is not guaranteed to be polite. An interface that can take external power separately from its data connection — rather than drawing everything through one laptop port — is more stable through voltage sag, cheap hubs and long sessions.
The short version
Buy the channel count you will need in two years, not the one you need this week. Trust published numbers over adjectives. Treat ADAT and MIDI as the difference between a purchase and a platform. And weigh the warranty by how it is honoured in India, not by the integer in the headline.
