The most musical recordings of small bands are usually the ones captured together — everyone playing at once, in time with each other rather than with a click. The received wisdom says you need a big console or a rack of converters for that. You need four good inputs and a plan.

The arithmetic of four channels

Four inputs will not give a drum kit its own multitrack. What four inputs give you is one separate, editable track per musician for most small ensembles — which is the thing that actually matters at mix time:

  • Singer-songwriter duo: two vocal mics, guitar mic, guitar DI. Done, with a channel to spare if one singer does not play.
  • Acoustic trio: a mic per instrument, plus a room mic that will earn its place in the mix more often than you expect.
  • Rhythm section demo: kick mic, one overhead for the whole kit, bass DI, guitar or scratch vocal on four.
  • Podcast panel: four voices, four faders, four chances to fix an interruption in the edit.

The discipline is deciding what each channel is for before anyone plays a note. A channel that is “sort of for the guitar and the backing vocal” is a channel you cannot mix.

Assign the inputs deliberately

On the R4, inputs one and two are combo XLR/TRS jacks; three and four are 6.35 mm jacks for line and instrument sources. So the natural layout writes itself: microphones on 1–2, DIs and line sources on 3–4. Condensers take 48 V phantom on the XLR inputs — enabled per channel, so a ribbon or dynamic on the neighbouring channel is never at risk. A bass or guitar plugged straight in goes to input three or four with instrument mode (INST) engaged, which raises the input impedance so the pickups keep their top end.

Gain staging when everyone plays at once

Soundchecking a band one musician at a time lies to you — people play louder together. Two of the R4’s front-panel functions were built for exactly this moment:

  • AUTO listens to about ten seconds of input and sets the channel’s gain to a −12 dBFS reference. Run it while the whole band plays the loudest section of the song, one channel at a time. What you get is consistent, deliberate headroom on every channel instead of four guesses.
  • SAFE then stands guard during takes: if a transient threatens to clip, it steps the gain down before the waveform folds. On a live take that cannot be repeated — which is the whole point of tracking a band live — this is the difference between a great take and a great take with one ruined chorus.

Aim peaks around −12 dB on the display’s meters and resist the urge to record hot. With 110 dB of dynamic range underneath you, quiet is not noisy; clipped is forever.

Monitoring: everyone in time

Latency while overdubbing is annoying. Latency while a band tracks together is fatal — four musicians each hearing themselves a beat late will drift apart within a bar. Hardware direct monitoring solves this: each channel’s MON switch routes it straight to the monitor path before the computer is involved, so the band hears itself now, not after a round trip through the DAW. The R4’s monitor path can run the channels independently or merged, and the headphone amp has its own level control — so the room mix and the performer mix stop being the same compromise. Keep the DAW’s own input monitoring off, and latency simply stops being a topic.

Watching four levels at once

Tracking a band solo-engineered means you are also the meter bridge. A front-panel display that shows all four input levels simultaneously — plus sample rate and channel states — means a dying cable or a drifting level is something you notice during the take, not a discovery during mixdown. Glance, confirm four meters moving, play on.

When the band outgrows four

One day it will be a full drum kit and the band, or a vocal ensemble, and that is what the R4’s ADAT optical input is for: an eight-channel external preamp over one cable takes the same rig to twelve inputs, with nothing else on the desk changing. We wrote a whole explainer on how that works.

Until then: four inputs, assigned deliberately, gain-staged with intent, monitored in hardware. That is not a compromise setup. That is how most of the records you love were tracked — a small number of good channels, used well.
